okay to jam a little

I agree with this article that the traffic problems in Singapore are minor when you compare to other countries...seriously.

S'pore's traffic woes are minor: US don
Urban planning specialist says local policies have kept roads here flowing and gridlock-free

By Maria Almenoar

MOTORISTS grumpy about being stuck in traffic jams should count themselves lucky that gridlock does not happen here, an American urban planning specialist said.

Singapore has, through vehicle ownership and usage policies, managed to give owners the freedom to drive their cars amid just limited amounts of congestion, said Professor Alan Altshuler, who teaches urban policy and planning at Harvard University in the United States.

His practical experience in managing transport issues comes from having served as Massachusetts' first Secretary of Transportation from 1971 to 1975.

Of Singapore roads, he observed: 'Occasionally one does get caught in traffic jams near downtown and at peak periods. But it's amazing how most of the roads are flowing pretty freely even during the peak hours.'

He gave The Straits Times an exclusive interview on Tuesday, ahead of his public lecture at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy this evening, titled 'Lessons Not To Learn From American Cities'.

Referring to Singapore's use of the Electronic Road Pricing system, high fuel taxes and the certificate of entitlement scheme to balance ownership and usage, Prof Altshuler said: 'Virtually no one else has these tools.'

He added that these policy tools could be tweaked to adjust to a growing population of people and cars and increasing affluence.

Turning to Japan, he noted that despite its high level of car ownership, usage levels were low because high fuel prices and congestion kept cars off the road.

Saying he was struck by the common sight of Japanese in residential neighbourhoods polishing their cars, he quipped: 'In Japan, they buy their cars to polish them, not to drive them.'

His public lecture will explain why the American system is not the way to go either.

No real solution has been found for congestion there. Cities just grow larger.

He explained: 'The principle has been to sprawl. The more roads you create, the lower the density. Traffic spreads out...That's not been a conscious policy for congestion control. That strategy is no longer as effective as it used to be.'

The average American's heavy reliance on his car has also made the country's average per-head energy usage and greenhouse emissions six times that of the world average, and eight times the Asian average.

And it is not true to say that Americans own that many cars because they can afford to, Prof Altshuler added.

The US and high-income Asian cities such as Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore have comparable regional Gross Domestic Products per capita: US$31,400 (S$45,012) in the US versus the US$31,600 average in the high-income Asian cities.

Yet, car usage patterns are so different across these cities.

The figure for passenger kilometre per capita - how many kilometres of road each person uses - is 18,150 in the US but only 3,610 in the Asian cities.

Prof Altshuler pointed to historical factors like the US' commitments to private property, capitalism and taking the lead in motor-vehicle production among the reasons for its problem.

The concern now is whether emerging economic powerhouses such as China and India will follow the US model or that of high-income Asian countries such as Japan and Singapore, he said.

Land Transport..akan datang

had to read up the speech made by Transport Minister for work purpose.. thought it sounded very impressive and really make me look forward to all the changes that are akan datang... The speech is pretty interesting since it concerns us public transport users..

The Land Transport Review is finally out...something the whole of the LTA was so so busy with for the past 1 year at least.. People Centred Land Transport System. For those who missed out..

Title : Transport minister announces major changes in land transport
By : Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia
Date : 18 Jan 2008 1248 hrs (GMT + 8hrs)

SINGAPORE: Major changes are expected in land transport after more than a year-long review to improve the situation.

In the first three major announcements, Transport Minister Raymond Lim zoomed in on changes to the bus system, which serves two-thirds of all commuter trips today.

Speaking at the opening of the Land Transport Gallery, he outlined the urgency of the problem, stressing that with trips poised to increase 60 per cent between now and 2020, the only option is to steer people towards taking more public transport.

For that to happen, Mr Lim said, not just the quantity, but also the quality of public transport would have to improve tremendously.

Currently, the system is fragmented between two operators - SBS and SMRT - which plan the routes based on commercial considerations and minimum service obligations.

But the result is this: there are more than 250 bus services in all but only 1 in 3 come every 10 minutes or less and some even take more than half an hour to arrive.

Then there is the problem of feeder services that make circuitous loops before arriving at the interchange.

So firstly, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) will take over the central planning of the bus network, with the commuters' ease of journey as the main focus.

Buses will also get more priority on the roads, with more full-day bus lanes and making it mandatory for cars to give way to buses at bus bays.

More integrated public transport hubs, like the ones at Toa Payoh, Sengkang and Ang Mo Kio, will be upgraded to make transfers easier. Five more hubs will be upgraded and two more are already being upgraded.

And from next year, commuters will pay for distance travelled, regardless of the number of transfers made.

LTA will also introduce an integrated season pass for both bus and rail travel, regardless of operator.

And more travel information will be made available via panels, text messages and websites.

The second big change will be to introduce competition among operators, including opening the market to new players.

Mr Lim said: "They found that introducing some form of competition, or even just the real threat of competition, is an effective way to keep bus operations efficient and raise service standards."

The Ministry says there are limited economies of scale for fleets above 500 buses.

And since the country has a 3,700-strong bus fleet, Singapore could potentially have more than two operators.

The island will be carved up into different regions and potential operators will bid for these in a competitive tender.

The third major change is for the LTA to keep its pulse on the community's transport issues through regular dialogue with grassroots members.

More changes, including those to the ERP system, are expected in the following weeks. - CNA/ac/vm/ch

TGIF in advanceeeeeeee

this week seemed to be snailing past...

maybe it's coz i'm recovering from my eyes, frustrated that i can't bathe my usual way coz need to ensure my eyes don't get wet, so much work coming up, and my officers are perpetually on course/leave...the weather... can't go gym... everything just adds on n rub against each other creating dangerous sparks of irritation.

but perfect vision is really something money cannot buy...err..okay..now u can but it's still a hassle and expensive. i still have the habit of heading straight to the bathroom wanting to remove my contacts... something i've done for almost 10 years. hard to break.

anyway, yep... maybe i need a holiday. my colleague will be off to krabi tomorrow, i've got a friend on a biz trip to japan... i need my periodic dose of foreign air.

was talking to sharon san and she suddenly mentioned that mayday's coming for concert in April. I was like...huh... are u sure not?? don't say that just to create conversation okay. and I checked it up in sistic and nope, no listings. so i scolded her for cheating my feelings...

then... i decided to visit a reliable site.. ayu san's blog. she'll nvr fail to blog about any news on mayday once she's got any inkling of what's going to happen. and i hate to admit that sharon san was right!! mayday is coming! 26th April!

i called up sharon san and this was the only time when I was happy to admit that I was wrong.

ayu ayu! are u going?? bought tickets?! must update me this outdated mayday buddy k..

be yourself my friend.

My intuition was right. again! didn't like him during the St John's trip when I saw him telling those highly drama mama stories about his travelling experiences.

added another sad creature into my list of liars who lie to gain attention.

they're sad coz if they have to resort to losing their integrity just so to have common topics with the group, lying just so to gain attention, gain security perhaps, to win back some self confidence? the saddest part is probably that they got found out.. can't even lie properly.

it's a vicious cycle...you lie to cover up another lie.

so what if you're not well travelled? so what if you're not rich? true friends will not judge you by these.

Not that I haven't done that before. I was in primary 5 when I told another friend that I keep a dog at home. wahahha... like so DUH when I think about it now.. coz like eveyone my age at that time had a dog at that time and it was my secret wish to keep one..just that my parents will never allow.

that was when I was P5..pardonable? for a full grown adult who's able to "travel Europe" alone, is it still pardonable to fabricate such lies, pretending to be in france when he's still in Singapore??

Thanks to technology that he was found surfing my friend's blog using a Singapore IP add while he was "supposed" to be in france. GROSS

sorry....I live by my morals. This kind of people really irks me although I'm just blogging from a 3rd party's point of view.

Zhen>> dun be upset..just be glad you found out early! being kaypoh by nature, you can hire me to scan pple before you make friends with them, i'll help u! FOC! =P

mochi says: Dun pretend to be somebody you're not. Tsukareta ne.

mochi emphasizes: if you can't be comfortable with who you are, dun expect pple to be comfortable with your company.

Be Water my Friend ~Bruce Lee

bruce really looks quite good leh..nice, fit and grunch look.droolz.

Bruce Lee - Lost interview - More amazing video clips are a click away

pls hire a new exec soon...like SOON.

it's not always good to be a jack of all trades. oh..was it ever good?

my predicament after my kaki left. as the director probably had foresight that my kaki is leaving, she swapped our portfolios 2 months ago. now that she has left, the only person who has had 4 months experience in the vacant portfolio is............. azukimochi desu.

naturally, all pending innovation work fits snuggly under mochi's belt. unspokenly arrowed. not that my manager has much of a choice coz she's not familiar as well.

she asked me an interesting question today," ohhh..22nd is the meeting hor... i'm on course.."

I added, "and joyce's on course too."

She replied," then................................. meeting you go alone ah?"

I gave a snigger and answered, " it has to be me, can't get anybody else right?" rolling my eyes at myself as I commit myself so willingly, as if i can't wait to do extra set of meeting minutes. urgh. sorry, couldn't resist the sarcasm... the only subtle outlet for me to vent my frustrations.

my kaki's officers all came to me today with their stuff and I couldn't reject since they know I know their stuff. Dun mind if i'm free but when i'm not, really felt like throwing my hands up in the air and swing back and forth.....like ahhhhh.. i'm OE not IE! wakatta?!

being nice and all, i only rose my arms about 20 deg high and managed to restrain them from swinging back n forth.

mochi says: nice guys and gals finish last.

traumatic friday

quite a heart wrenching sight when i saw my colleague clutching her chest and throwing herself back and forth on her chair. thought she was joking initially till we saw tears streaming down her face with agony. i ran to get warm water for her but when i got back to her cubicle, she was already semi conscious complaining in blurps that she couldn't breathe and her chest is killing her. my assistant manager ann was pretty calm and kept asking her to breathe in deeply and not panic. i held onto her hand for assurance but basically i was at a loss.

i got out of the cubicle before i started sobbing uncontrollably, scolding the ambulance as i did..the ambulance was taking too long to arrive.. 25 min we clocked. 25 min! anyone would have died lor.. she was sent to hospital and everyone went back to work praying for her. what a way to start a friday. she's fine now but since has happened a few times before, she should get a 2nd opinion coz the doc told her that her heartbeat was fine and all.. gave her some medication and she was discharged.

I so cannot be a nurse, doctor or any other medical personnel..too emotional.. i cringe at the sight of blood and injections. mere descriptions of the process will do the trick as well. I remember how I fainted upon seeing my grandma remove her stitches at the clinic. I ended up being the one taking a rest on the bed sipping warm water with my ah ma looking at how useless i am.

she was my kaki at work so i was exceptionally worried.. got me thinking how i would cope if anything happens to my loved ones.. hmmm.. i probably can't.

st john's island...happy bday zhen!

spent the saturday celebrating zhen's bday @ St. John's Island. Reminiscing her St john's days perhaps? heh. anyway, it was a 45min ferry ride from Marina South Pier with a 15 min stopover at Kusu Island. Can't remember who but one of us told the group that praying at the temple would help single ladies find a husband. haha..wonder if it's true.

forgot that I have super good sense of equilibirum, felt totally sick thru out the ferry ride.. kept psychoing myself to control and not puke. went abit of island exploring before leaving on the 4.15pm ferry... couldn't join the gang for dinner and headed to naz's place, popped a panadol and took a nap. was dozing off thru out watching Good Luck Chuck... anyway, no loss cos the show really sux...eeeks. glossy! did u say this was a super good show?!

mochi's 2007...

been too busy updating on all the year end feasting and forgot all about reflecting on 2007. Important process to help us set new, essential and REALISTIC resolutions as well as a recap of the ups and downs of the past year... snif sniff.

Top of mOchi's 2007:

  1. SKPS teaching stint - Has to be on the top of my list man. The start of 2007 was a bang.... A feat for me an untrained teacher to take charge of 3 mother tongue classes. Those crazily tiring, noisy, hair pulling days in school with miss peh and mdm hu, venting our frustrations eating cheap, oily and boring in the canteen. Days when I felt I was the guru to all the little ones......haha. sweet bonding with some of the children and totally disowning some of the incorrigible ones.
  2. Grappling with what I wanna do in life - felt really directionless after quitting.. didn't know what I really wanted to do and badly just wanted to get out of teaching. bugged sharon san so much...thx tomodachi for putting up w my whining!
  3. Rejections - was a year of rejections... as in i rejected pple... gomen nasai. totally unintentional and unexpected. my fault that I couldn't handle stuff well.. hope i'm doing better now.
  4. fated to be garmen servant? - started all over in my current job in june. crossed...twisted..... bent...whatever... my fingers that my days of job hopping would end. seriously, who likes to job hop?! the only plus point is that i'm really quite a pro at drafting cover letters and resignation letters. ask me ask me!
  5. Turkey trip with sharon san!!! - Definitely 1 of the highs in 2007! great place, great company, great scenery... what more can I expect. heh. lousy food tho.
  6. Evil shit - evil and much talked about decision but I trust my intuition too much to give up this chance to happiness. love u evil shit!
  7. Mayday concert - as always, something I look forward to every year but also worried about not able to get ppl to go with me...hahaha.sollie lehlio buddy... but i'm sure u enjoyed urself!

mOchi resolves to.......

  • To exercise more,
  • strike 4D or Toto (never buy how to strike?!!! cheh) ,
  • eat more healthily,
  • brush up on my nihon go,
  • earn more $$, shop more (only if I am earning more..),
  • go holiday... aiming hokkaido or china or korea ....anywhereee
  • give my parents more $...... realised this chinese phrase is really true..钱不是万能的,但没有钱就万万不能喔。

Time to move on to 2008. 要相信。。。 明年会更好!!

victorous cactus

~1 of my xmas wishlist in my office xmas gift exchange- a cactus to decorate my desk.. thanks angel! ~ on a less optimistic note... let's hope it survives..... that was glossy's finger trying to get a shot too.. sigh.~

happy 2008 朋友

really feel like terminating my facebook account.. the notifications are flooding my hotmail account like parasites. anyway, i'm really sick of fluff friends and all..think my speedy has dieded already..haha.. reminds me of my tamagochi. short lived.

the facebook fever has subsided la..starting to get on my nerves. been ignoring every application ppl sent me.. I tried scrolling down my profile just now and the scroll was never ending. omg. gross! mochi san..be more discerning can...ppl add u also add..tsk tsk.

will probably still keep it for the sake of taking a break during work..throw a few sheep at ppl and super poke them when i'm free.....till the time my office firewall blocks it...which I believe will be pretty soon.

Happy 2008 my friends!!~~~~~

把所有的不爽留在2007。。。只许幸福,健康和快乐陪我们跨年喔!
